The Phoenix guys came up to me and were like, “Mac, are you ready to practice? You don’t have to worry about being super prolific or weird or virtuous. Seeing bands around like that changes your world, because you realize, These guys don’t really know what they’re doing and their band rules. I learned, and it turned out I was all right at it, and I pursued it because my family, they’re all musicians, so they got me lessons, yadda yadda.… Then I started going to some shows with the older kids I went to school with. In junior high school, kids start learning how to play “Stairway to Heaven.” I didn’t want to, but then you realize that all the girls like the guys who can play “Stairway” more than the guys who can’t.
